PHCC takes great pride in the work it does with the Junior (8-18 yrs) members members of the club and for a number of years has had a regular weekly session as a means of raising both skill levels and water confidence.

As well as the Junior Sessions on Tuesdays at Lake Pier the juniors have their own program of events most weekends throughout the year, including race meetings -

and in the winter separate sessions at the Ferndown Leisure Centre pool prior to the Adult members’ rolling and practice sessions.

Paddlepower Skills Programme (8-16yrs)

This group meets on Tuesday evenings 6.30pm – 8pm during British Summer Time at our Lake Pier site (mostly) and on Wednesday evenings 7.30pm – 8.15pm at Ferndown Leisure Centre Pool during British Winter Time  (GMT - UTC)

The main focus of this group is on basic paddle skill development following the British Canoeing Paddlepower scheme designed specifically for young people.

Our paddling year is split into four ‘terms’, two outdoor during the Summer season and two indoor during the Winter season. We have a high coach to student ratio for these sessions and the children progress through our 3 colour groups based on their age and personal achievement.

The ultimate aim of this group is to develop the children’s personal paddle skills to a level of basic competency whilst gradually introducing them to the various disciplines of our sport that we as a club take part in. We hope that by doing this we will provide a solid base for them launching into a lifetime of paddling pursuing whatever elements of paddlesport they themselves decide they are most interested in.

For those in this group who decide they are interested in coaching we attempt to provide the support and environment within this group for them to pursue their Cadet Leader Award. https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/courses/cadet-leader/  These young people have in the past gone on to provide valuable support to the coaches working with this group and indeed have in some cases gone on to become coaches in their own right.

Places within this group are limited, 18 in the summer terms and 12 in the winter terms. Booking details are sent out to all parents of junior members a month or so before the start of the term and places are allocated based on a clearly defined priority system which favours those attending most regularly and those who fail to get offered a place in the previous term.
